No flamenco dance costume is complete without a flower in your hair. But, depending on where you live, it may not always be easy to find the perfect flower for your outfit. Or you might just prefer your flamenco costume to be really unique. In either case making your own flower is an option worth exploring.
I recently stumbled across the video tutorial for these gorgeous flowers made from tissue paper.
I think they are a stunning hair accessory and definitely pass
my personal test for whether or not I attempt a craft project:
- uses materials I have or are easy to find and inexpensive
- requires tools and equipment I have or are easy to find and inexpensive
- isn’t overly time consuming (mind you, if I really love the end result I’m not too picky about this one .. see the tatted accessories for examples)
- the techniques used are easy to learn so I can enjoy a reasonable result quickly and hassle free
The next thought that occurred to me was that a paper peony is likely too delicate for flamenco dancing so unless you are going to a “feria” you might need something a little more sturdy – enter fabric flowers.
As usual in cases like this Pinterest is a great source of inspiration and highly addictive. The pins in my new flower board show projects that seem to pass the above test or are simply too beautiful to not pin.

But then .. Admiring other people’s creativity is only fun if it leads to me creating something.
It only took a couple of days of looking at all those amazing flowers and checking out tutorials before I started my own experiments:

The pink organza rose is the first flower I made based on this tutorial. The instructions were very easy to follow and this was definitely not the last flower of this type I’ve made.
Then kanzashi flowers caught my eye. They are not typically “flamenco” but I think they definitely could be. The flowers I made didn’t follow a particular tutorial, I just watched lots and tried different folds for different petals and arranged them any way I liked. I used some ribbon, some organza strips and some satin strips I had. That’s the advantage of sewing a lot .. you have all sorts of fabric scraps floating around and now you have a new use for them!
Have you made any fabric flowers? Why not share them and inspire us all.
